p0122 TPS Help reading wire diagram for fault finding

Hello friends, I've got a p0122 (TPS G69) problem and I want to check wire connections with a DMM. I have been reading around and tried to learn a little about fault finding with a DMM. I'm not experienced with the tool and I don't want to mess up my electric system.

I have the wire diagram (in german), but I'm not sure which is ground, positive etc.

The only reading I've done (ignition on) is connecting black probe to negative battery terminal and red probe to the 5 wire terminal pins. This reads with the DMM setting dc volts (20), from wire no.:
1:5.01v
2:0.02v
3:0.02v
4:0.02v
5:4.40v

I can't make too much of this, but in my understanding from looking at the diagram, wire 3 is ground, which is marked with (220) (Legend explains ground connection in motor wiring harness). Should I put black probe on this terminal and red to wire 2 (which is connected to the ECU j623) and read if there is a problem with correct voltage? Since wire 2 is G69 and the vcds error reads "signal too low - intermittent", this is what I should focus on first? What other wires should I check, and how, are they negative, positive? What is the "wrong" way to probe? positive from battery to positive wire?

I'm set on doing this, but I want to do it right. I have had issues with Egr and valve 4 years ago which have both been replaced by me. Yesterday I cleaned the terminal housing and wires with electronic cleaner, it did have some oil residue from the last time egr failed (electronic housing filled with oil). Haven't driven the car too much after this last MIL came on, but it seems that the MIL comes when accelerating harder. Driving soft and low rpm the MIL disappears after a while, before coming back.

I want to check the wires before I go on removing the valve and egr electronics, and the ECU to read resistance and continuity (which is a bit of a hassle in comparison).

Hope someone has some experience with this :cool:

VAG current flow diagrams are a mystery to most people but I love them and have decades of experience with them but I need to be at my desk with ELSA open (it is annoying that VW is only in German on 6 but my technical German if fairly good) to be able to follow you as it is awkward on an iPad. Two points though, if you had a problem with the feed you would have a G247 fault and if it was the earth and whatever else is on line D220 and you would have a a G247 and line D101 issue if it was the earth. I would say you have a J338 problem rather than a wiring fault as these are very rare, also testing the violet/yellow from T5q/2 back to T60/41 means removing the ECU chastity belt which is intentionally difficult. It would help if we knew more about what the vehicle is but to me it sounds like a CAYC 1.6 CRTDI.

When is the code detected?:
An excessively low voltage from the Throttle Position (TPP) Sensor is sent to Engine Control Module (ECM).

Description:
The Throttle Pedal Position (TPP) responds to the accelerator pedal movement. This sensor is a kind of potentiometer which transforms the throttle position into output voltage, and emits the voltage signal to the Engine Control Module (ECM). In addition, the sensor detects the opening and closing speed of the throttle valve and feeds the voltage signal to the Engine Control Module (ECM).

Idle position of the throttle valve is determined by the Engine Control Module (ECM) receiving the signal from the throttle position sensor. This sensor controls engine operation such as fuel cut. On the other hand, the Wide open and closed throttle position switch, which is built into the throttle position sensor unit, is not used for engine control.

Keithuk is correct, it's a cbab aka kebab. The point about the feed to G247 seems valid, I'm thinking I should start to disassemble the j338 and egr and check inside electronic housing for obvious signs of fault. It wouldn't be a surprise if they are oily, just like last time. I've also been reading that this can have something to do with the manifold gasket seal.. Which I'm also hoping not to remove. I do have the entire diagram, but as I said I'm not educated in this area. I can translate the German fine, but I don't know what are negative and positive and where to probe. I'll upload it here if anyone is interested.

Thanks Keithuk, I've actually seen the video (among many others), but I watched it again. The video link is working fine btw. Too bad the conclusion was to replace the entire unit, would've liked to see what the real issue was. He did however not search his Mitchell software for the right fault code, instead of p0122 he typed p0121. Wonder if it would matter though as the other codes gave the same conclusion.

I'm gonna remove and open both j338 and egr and see what I'll find. Thanks guys, for your quick replies:cool:

Right, you have added you cars spec to your signature now, saves me guessing. With it being a 2009 Golf it could be a 5 (1K) or 6 (5K) but it having the CBAB engine it shows it is a Golf 6. Cleaning the EGR valve is a messy waste of time usually, I would just fit the revised unit, part number 03L 131 501 K.

I automatically assumed my car make would show as it was typed in when registering. It is indeed a mark 6, they made them from late 2008 in EU. I wasn't thinking about the carb cleaning, but checking for oil inside the electronic housing and also if some soldered wires have fallen off. I saw a video where one of the pins had a week solder point and wasn't touching. I'm not going to buy a new unit before checking "all" possibility's as the unit itself is typically fine but the parts inside can fail. I know the tooth wheel that opens the shudder valve is made of simple plastic and my previous one did indeed have some of its teeth broken.

Are there any other ideas you have regarding the low signal from the G69 sensor?

The G69 is inside the J338 EGR valve and yes the potentiometer can get contaminated with oil which naturally passes through the charge air system as a vapour and condenses inside the motor housing.

**UPDATE**

I haven't been able to do anything with the car the past week because we had to use it. Have only driven in city limits, no highway/freeway speeds.

I installed a new battery and ran some more vcds testing yesterday. New codes have now come up:

008448 - Throttle Actuator Control Circuit
P2100 - 000 - Open Circuit - Intermittent

008213 - Intake Manifold Flap Position Sensor (Bank 1)
P2015 - 000 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent

008198 - Intake Manifold Flap; Bank 1
P2006 - 000 - Stuck Closed - Intermittent

008196 - Intake Manifold Flap; Bank 1
P2004 - 000 - Stuck Open

Since my first error code was p0122, I'm wondering if this is related. I know the p2015 code can be fixed with a dieselgeek bracket, so I'm considering ordering it.

In the meantime, Crasher if you are still here should I check more for faulty wires with a DMM - and can you give me some tips where I should check? Could this be a fault with wires in ECM do you advise open it and check for corrosion etc?

New update

Yesterday I removed EGR and ASV and found some oil has leaked inside the ASV (pic 1-4). The gears look all ok and EGR (pic 6+7) didn't have a single oil drop inside electric housing. Som carbon build up in both units just a thin layer, but I guess that's normal. I cleaned a little around the egr lid (pic 8 before cleaning) just in case. The wheels/gears move easily with no obstruction opening the flaps and lid on asv and egr.

I sprayed electronics cleaner on the electronics inside asv and have let dry over night. My next step would be to reassemble the units back, but I would like to check with a multimeter if there is any way to do that? Need some guiding here!

I forgot to upload the j338 adaptation video in the last post, but here it is. Are these values correct or are they showing that something is wrong? They show (minus) -5.5% on both left columns and the voltage far right changes between 0.000V and 0.076V (one time very briefly up to 0.1xxV). Something is interfering in some way (bad connections between units/wires etc?) and asv doesn't get the full voltage its supposed to? In the other two adaptations linked in my other post they are considerably higher, at around 0.5xxv. What should "correct" voltage values be?

1-4: ASV gears/electronics

9: Intake manifold (this is where EGR connects, a thin layer of carbon here)

In the previous post the attached vcds log had an error with address 09: cent. elect. (J519) posting new here for this address (see attached two files). Would there be any correlation between faults here and the other faults (ASV++)? Disregard fault on headlamp cleaning system as I've removed the fuse here. The lights work so I don't know what fault it could be, but the bulbs are pretty old. Maybe just replacing them should fix it.

Before removing the asv and egr I checked to see if the asv flap would move turning the ignition on/off. It didn't. I heard some kind of a tick sound though. Could it have been switched off since its in "faulty mode"? Right before getting my hands dirty I had the motor running and switched off the ignition the flap seemed to work fine because there was no engine shake, which had previously been shaking for the last week/week and a half when switching off.

So I'm still thinking wire issues or maybe the oil leak inside asv caused this? Now that I have cleaned it, maybe that would fix the problem? But what about the manifold fault codes p2015, p2004/6 that recently came up? Are they just a symptom of the asv faults?

I've just resistance tested the asv terminal pins and the 12v motor (control the gears/flap) with a dmm. See below chart:

As you can see the resistance shows 0.6 and 0.7 on the terminal pin 4 and 5 which goes to 12v motor (see pic with arrows), so the housing terminal seems fine for those pins. And the 12v motor shows 0.6 so this is fine. These are my guesses.
EDIT: I finally got test results from the other 3 pins: They all show up fine about 0.6 - see chart for results!

Are there any other tests I can do with a dmm before i mount the valves back in the car?

So my final question now is, I need help to probe the wires when connected to the car: Which wire can I test and how? I would start to disconnect negative on battery (turn on ignition?), place black probe on negative battery and where can I put red test probe now that I have the answers to what wire has which signal??

I am sure I posted a reply to this yesterday???? I would not test like that as I do not have the time, the number of hours spent proving the part defective would cost more than the new part.

I see it as learning new things which I like and I hate paying for new stuff when there's a way to fix it. That's why I'm here. If you could guide me in the direction of probing the pins without damaging the electronics that would be awesome;)

That is being a proper mechanic but there is no place for it in the modern world as customers need results fast and cheap or they scrap the car... apparently that is eco friendly... scrap a ten year old car and buy electric!

Yes, that's the way the world is going towards! In the meantime if you would like to hand over some dough so I can buy me an electric ride that would be very nice:p if not I will have to continue with my fault findings, and I would be very happy if you would like to share any knowledge towards me trying to use the multimeter in the correct way;)

There is no VAG test procedure for checking the inputs to the V157 or the outputs from the integral G69. The plug has five wires

1) Yellow/blue which is a 5v supply from the ECU and also supplies a number of other components so if this was missing you would have at least five fault codes.

2) Lilac/yellow

3) Brown/red which is the earth and again provided by the ECU and shared with six components so the same would apply as in 1

4) Brown/lilac

5) Lilac

The diagram does not show what 2, 4 and 5 do apart from coming from the ECU to the G69 inside the V157.

Did you check out the videos I posted? This shows measuring blocks group 124 "throttle valve control module (j338 adaptation), is it not a suitable test for my specific car model?

Compared to the other two videos the voltage is very low 0.076v at max. vs the other two have 0.5xxv.

Wire 2 is "OUT" what does that mean? And wire 4 is "motor" does it send a positive signal to the motor? Wire 5 is the thickest (same with wire 4) and a solid color does that point to being positive?

Does it seem right that j338 has wire 3+4+5 and G69 has wire 1+2 and where should I put the lead (positive or negative?) for voltage measuring?

I don't know what you should see on 2, 4 and 5, ELSA does not tell you. If it was being worked on with the ODIS system that would probably bring up a Guided Fault Finding test that would say what you should see. I don't think a V157 needs adapting, again ELSA does not mention it.

UPDATE

After reinstalling ASV I still get error p0122, but also had a couple errors from intake manifold before I removed the ASV, total 7 errors. The thing is they are all "intermittent". This must be a clue? The ASV ( J338 ) is operating but having intermittent faults. Should this be a sign of bad wires or maybe engine vibration on wires? I'm not sure where to check now. The p0122 fault is the only one that has frequent faults (70) the others have only 1 fault frequency (except p2100 "throttle actuator control circuit" which has faulted 4 times):

I suspect the other faults were a bi-effect by the p0122 which has faulted 70 times. Should I check some fuses, someone at another forum suggested certain fuses but can't remember where. There are no fuses for these parts (ASV and EGR) but sometimes bad fuses can effect other parts??

In the last days after reinstalling the part the codes are always gone when I start the car.. Only to reappear, especially when harder accelerating. Have been very soft on the pedal last weeks and it seems to help some.. Low rpm

You do realise that on the CBAB engine the V157 is not the throttle body inlet flap before the EGR valve, it is the motor on the inlet manifold? The ASV flap is the "J338 Throttle Valve Control Unit" which contains the G69.
